When to turn a group around

We decide before it feels urgent
The moment weather or fatigue makes the decision obvious to everyone in the group, it's already later than we'd like it to be. We build in checkpoints throughout the day where we ask ourselves honestly whether continuing still makes sense, rather than waiting until someone's visibly struggling or the sky's already turned before bringing it up.
This means we sometimes call a turnaround when things still look fine to everyone else. That's an uncomfortable position to be in as a guide — explaining a decision that isn't obviously justified yet — but it's the only way the decision actually works. By the time it's obvious, the group's options have already narrowed.
Nobody remembers the summit they didn't reach
People worry that turning back will ruin the trip, that it'll feel like a failure hanging over the rest of the week. In practice, it rarely does. What people actually remember afterward is whether the day felt safe and well-handled, not whether they touched a specific point on a map that was never really the point of coming.
How we explain it in the moment
We don't dress a turnaround up as a group vote or soften it into a suggestion. We say plainly what we're seeing and what we're doing about it, because vague explanations create more anxiety than clear ones, even when the clear explanation is "we're not continuing."
Most groups take this better than guides expect the first time they do it. People came on the trip to be led, and a guide who makes hard calls decisively is usually more reassuring than one who hedges and lets the group talk them out of it.
