The gear we replace every year

Safety gear doesn't get a second season
Rope, first aid supplies, and anything load-bearing gets replaced on a fixed schedule, not when it starts looking worn. Gear like this can fail in ways you can't see from the outside — a rope that's taken one hard fall isn't the same rope anymore structurally, even though nothing about its appearance has changed. Waiting for visible wear before replacing it means waiting for a warning that may never come.
Everything else earns its keep longer
Packs, boots, and jackets we run until they actually fail, because they fail in ways you can feel before they fail in ways that matter — a strap that's stopped holding weight properly, a seam that's started to give at the shoulder, a zipper that sticks in cold weather when it never used to. We're not precious about gear for its own sake, replacing things on principle or because a newer version exists.
We're precious about it staying dependable in the specific conditions we actually use it in, which sometimes means a five-year-old pack outperforms something brand new that hasn't been broken in yet.
How we decide what's worth replacing versus repairing
A torn seam usually gets repaired. A broken buckle gets replaced. The line isn't about age or appearance — it's about whether the failure is something we can fix reliably in the field if it happens again mid-trip, or whether it's the kind of failure that tends to cascade once it starts.
Most of what we carry has been through this evaluation more than once. By the time something's actually retired, it's earned that retirement through years of us trusting it under pressure, not through a schedule someone wrote down once and never revisited.
